C30 R On The Way?

Lately, there have been a number of reports indicating that Volvo plans to build a special “R” performance version of its 2007 C30 hatchback. Both AutoExpress and Jalopnik are citing dealer sources who say Volvo is readying a C30R with a 250 horsepower engine derived from the current S60R. While still speculation, the number of sources reporting the same thing adds to the credibility of these rumors.

Jalopnik reports that : "According to a Volvo sales manager, the reader writes, the company is planning to build a hot-hatch version of its upcoming C30 sporting a “an engine derived from the S60 R’s 2.5 L i5 high pressure turbo in the range of around 180 - 190kw” (that’s in range of 250 hp)."

The S60R Makes 300 bhp.

Quote:
The S60R is powered by a thoroughly modified version of the 208-hp, 2.5-liter turbocharged in-line five that powers the base XC90 and the S60 AWD. "Thoroughly modified" translates to a low-restriction intake, two intercoolers, reground camshafts, reinforced pistons, continuously variable valve timing on both inlet and exhaust sides, and a new cylinder head and exhaust manifold. peak boost is 14.7 psi. The result is 300 ponies peaking at 5500 rpm and 295 pound-feet of torque from 1950 to 5250 rpm.
Why would Volvo De-tune the S60's motor for the C30?

I have also read the rumous of C30R version but power claims have been around 260 bhp.

Volvo needs to build the R version if they want my $$$.

A true "R"

Shomare , As the Volvo folks are obviously watching everyones comments here very carefully, would you please "build" your ideal C30 R ,once more for their education .. As I remember yours had the 6 rather than the 5 ,was awd [or at least lsd etc] ... It seems that their rumored "R" does not measure up to what I remember your outlined version was .. I would appreciate it if you would remind us all what a true "R" should look like,as those of us at this site appreciate your knowledge of this marque and its possibilities .

Since the C30 is based on the S40 then the S60 R engine will not fit so they have to make an RNC version of it like they have with the other 5 Cylinder engines.

We know that there is a 260bhp engine in the C30 concept so we just have to wait and see when it will be in production.

Does it really matter if it's badged as an R or not?

dont care about R badge

Grant, I dont care about the R badge as a matter of fact I prefer a sleeper to a RED FLAG,however, I just want the car to be the best it can be "out the gate" . I am not into aftermarket "adjustments" and "add on's",made by amateurs because the manufacturer blew an opportunity.

The R motor is not that much bigger that it would be impossible to shoehorn it under the hood. However, the new I6 is a better fit and makes 350 bhp in the full pressure version.

Now Saab is talking about producing a Saab 9-1 for 2010

And, VW has plans for a new Scirocco

Look Familiar?

A true R could offer AWD and 300 bhp.

It is necessary that any C30R offer a minimum of 260 bhp and either AWD or a LSD in order that it be competitive with the likes of Audi.

Volvo already has a RNC version of the T5 = the one in the S40 V50.

I wonder if the T5 in the ford focus, S-Max and the Galaxy is the RNC or the RN series engine......

the C30 could easily have a T5.... :)

RNC "T5" is nothing more than a compact version of the 2.5T RN engine.

The new T5 engine for the P2 models is basically an R engine with a smaller bore. 2.4 ltr vs 2.5 ltr

A 260 HP T5 is basically nothing bore than the current engine with a smaller bore combined with the rods and pistons of the P2 T5 engine.

A current R engine will fit the S40, Heico did it with their ODIN project car, but a lot needs to be changed.

I think Volvo will offer the 260 HP engine at some point. Current C70T5 is simply not powerfull enough given it's price.

Auto Express also expects a C30 R performance derivitive, at least for Europe, which will include a 260-bhp 2.4L turbocharged inline five-cylinder, 19-inch wheels, a stiffer suspension and Brembo brakes.
Volvo had better not tease us in the States by keeping an R version in Europe.

Volvo needs a c30R to reel me in

Totally agree with most of what everyone has said. I'm in my 3rd volvo right now but have been becoming jaded with volvo's lack of punch in it's current offerings (and I can't afford to spend $40,000 on a v70r). If volvo wants to keep me and get me to buy up, they need to bring the c30r to the states...i will happily pay for a c30r if its price point is significantly below that of the s60r or v70r. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make it available in the states by the summer of '07!!!!

Sport Modes

Hey does anyone drive the sport wagon with the different modes. I am kinda curious as to whether or not the new c30 might have the different sport and normal modes. I am a little worried about the mpg for this turbo engine. Thoughts?

An option like the adjustable suspension is going to add $$$ to the bottom line.

As far as MPG goes, the T5 in the S40 gets 20 mgh in the city and 28 on the Highway with the six-speed manual gearbox.

I'd expect nearly the same if not just slightly better since it should be lighter than the S40.

Sorry to all the FORD guys who know about this allready...
Just thought it could "stir the pot" about a "R" version again a little - especially now that more and more reports are coming through about the T5 being the same old 218hp engine we know allready.
Have to say the FOCUS looks pretty hot in these pics as well....

300HP Volvo-Powered Ford Focus ST from WOLF

“Cossie” heir with turbo tuning

Jul 25, 2006

source: WOLF RACING

Editor's Note: Why feature a Ford Focus on Swedespeed? In case you've missed it, the Ford Focus ST is about as close to a Volvo as any Ford has gotten since the blue oval invested in Volvo. The Focus itself is P1-based, meaning it shares component sets with everything from the the S40 and V50 to the new C70 and just-shown C30. At the heart of the ST beats the same turbocharged Volvo 5-cylinder fitted under the hoods of the Focus' aforementioned Swedish cousins. Given Wolf Racing is announcing a 300 hp kit for the P1 spec T5 engine for this Ford, we found this news more than applicable to S40, V50 and C70 owners on this site, as well as all of those thinking of putting a deposit down on the hot new C30.

Begin Press Release:

WOLF has been attending to the brand with the blue emblem for 30 years as the most competent partner for sophisticated tuning, and it has accumulated an enormous wealth of experience during that time. WOLF's involvement in racing since 1977 has played a big part in that. Who doesn't remember the feared Cosworth RS 500 versions of the Ford Sierra - lovingly called "Cossie" by its fans - with which WOLF RACING stirred up the DTM ... and won? WOLF also caused a sensation in rally racing - Group N. And WOLF is still involved in racing today. All of the experience gathered from that flows into its street tuning program. Drivers of the current Ford Focus ST also benefit from that. The car is entirely in the tradition of the sporty Ford models, like the broad-backed Escort RS 2000, the Escort Turbo, the Sierra Cosworth or the Focus RS. The ST is a strong model, but like all of the modern cars, the ST has also added a bit of "flab" - it's a compromise suitable for everyday use. Not so with WOLF. With its racing experience, WOLF turns the ST into an uncompromising sports car, a true heir to the famous Cosworths.

WOLF coaxes up to 300 bhp out of the 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo engine. That version is reserved for export customers. For the time being, German customers only get the 275 bhp Focus, but it is also more than just a toy. WOLF pulls out all the stops and allows for a comprehensive, well thought-out modification based on decades of experience in the racing and engine-tuning sector. And to the benefit of demanding Focus drivers. With the Focus ST from WOLF, the driver gets a legitimate successor to the sporty Ford RS and Cosworth models. And, of course, a significant improvement in terms of acceleration and flexibility.

For both power classes, WOLF also optimizes the control device, thereby generating additional power in all of the essential engine maps. At the same time, WOLF completely revises the turbo charger in terms of the turbines and the exhaust. In addition, the Neuenstein-based tuner modifies the injection nozzles. Professional tuning means that all necessary steps have to be undertaken when increasing power so that the power-enhanced engine does not die as the result of overheating. Consequently, WOLF also revises the water circulation system so that the cooling system matches the increased power. That way, the customer can rest assured that he will be able to enjoy the increased power for a long time.

For the R-car, I hope they go for AWD. There's some debate on whether or not AWD will be offered, Volvo's trying to keep the car light and nimble, but driving 250-300 bhp through the front wheels is madness!
Personally, I wish Volvo went back to RWD, the C30 could be sporty in all ranges if it was made for RWD, but if they want to offer subcompact economical models that compete with the MINI and priced below the S40, then FWD is a prerequisite.
