Wow. That took some skill. Too bad the driver didn't live to tell about it.

This accident happened approx 20 minutes from where I live. He must have been going a hell of a pace as that is quite a large roundabout to cartwheel acrross. The poor driver also had a passenger...his 9 year old son, luckily though he escaped with only minor cuts. It's a sad loss for the family, especially this close to Xmas and nothing to make light of guys !.

David H, Right on the seriousness of the crash and all, but from the picture it looks like a perfectly clear, mild, day there. As you say, he had to have been going pretty fast as he entered the rotary to tumble across it and fly into the building like that. Do you know if something happened to keep him from slowing down as he should have? Was he having a heart attack, stroke, etc. or was there some kind of malfunction with the car?

Can't help thinking of the little kid, and of whoever lived in that flat, I hope they were away.

The cobblestones on the central island must have been wet, and the car extremely fast. Do you know the speed limit in that area, David H?

Here's a link to some of the news articles.

The speed limit on that stretch of road is 70mph but ironically it drops to 50mph after that roundabout.

That's horrible, but 70mph entering a rotary (ok, roudabout)??!! I live in the state with the most in the US. Other north Americans seem to hate them when they come here, but we are used to them and I think they work well. Some are quite large, but the speed limit usually drops to 40mph as you approach and is often then suggested at 25mph (yellow sign) when you enter it, plus you have to yield to any cars when entering. How could they have a speed limit of 70mph and think it's safe? Are you sure it's not 70km/h?? I think that would make more sense. Either way, the poor guy must have been going pretty fast to get into the air like that.

It's definitely 70 mph not kph. But that doesn't mean that the poor driver in this instance was doing 70 when he entered the roundabout. 70 is the maximum speed, not the minimum. Most dual carriageways (2 lane highways) in the UK have 70mph limits. I live next to the A1 in Cambridgeshire and right by a roundabout. My village does have a 50 mph limit but most others are 70mph, and most do have roundabouts but they are well signposted and there are usually white or yellow lines painted across the road to remind you to slow down. They are all part of driving in the UK and something you learn to use

Wow! I can't imagine entering any roundabout at 70mph, but I certainly believe you. It's just too bad it wasn't posted as lower. As I said ours are posted as 40mph in advance and then the suggested (not necessarily enforced) limit in the rotary itself is 25mph and that is coming from a divided highway as well.
