Dyno Results!
So I put her on the rollers today, the results are interesting.
1st off these cars appear to run extremely lean, 14.4/1 @ 9.2 psi I say appear because the ARF (Air Fuel Ratio) was measured after the catalytic converter, which usually leans up the reading by about 1/2 a point.2nd The Swede's took away our boost after 5000 rpm , going from a peak of 9.2 psi to 6 psi. It is also interesting to see that as soon as the boost drops the AFR's richen up a bit (This is the inverse of what should be happening)This dyno was run stock at 83 deg F and 62% humidity (Sorry forgot what the baro pressure was) This is AFR on the left column and PSI on the right ![]() This is Torque on the left (217 ft/lbs) and HP on the right (190.5 hp) ![]() Here is a video, I should have shut off the exhaust fan. Sorry ![]() Last edited by SwapDOHC; 01-02-2008 at 07:00 PM. |

Awesome job man! So with the A/F going pig rich and the boost dropping off above 5k, there should be some nice gains from an ECU tune. Figure that if you ran 15psi through that engine, got that A/F right and held boost until redline, it'd be a totally different car. Hell you might based on what the A/F currently looks like, you might do well with a MBC.

Would you say a loss of 36 bhp at the wheels is normal?

Sure... numbers can vary a lot between dynos, day of the run, tire pressure, whether there was a fan or not. More important than the numbers themselves is the charts. Based on what he posted, there's a lot of room to make more power in the T5 engine as it's tuned for the C30; especially above 5K. The car runs well now. I can't imagine it with 15psi of boost, a flatter A/F curve and a few more degrees of timing. :-)

The concept car made 260 bhp with the same motor. Volvo chose to detune the consumer version so I'd assume that 260 is possible for daily driving with minimal impact on the drive train.

As far as the Hp drop it is right on the money with a 16% loss, the standard given loss in a manual car is 15%-20%. The Dyno Dynamics dyno typically has lower and more accurate results than other dynos. Tires were at 35 psi (Cold) & there were fans, 1 4500 cfm focused on the intercooler and one 3000 cfm on the radiator. In my opinion the C30 is seriously lacking in the "go" department, especially in the higher rpm range. I think if we could maintain 9 psi through red line it would make a world of difference. ![]() Last edited by SwapDOHC; 01-02-2008 at 07:03 PM. |

good work swap.
i didnt want to believe the numbers would be that low but after repeatedly hearing them i started to believe. but now i see them. 37hp loss for a fwd seems like a lot given the less distance for loss to occur like rwd. yet there it is. glad someone got a baseline. good luck tweaking with the mbc. keep us posted.

If we end up making more power, our 16% loss will go up. I run AWD Eclipse's with welded center differentials and the rwhp was usually about 20% less than the fwhp. Now I know that higher HP = higher percent loss to drag, but it still opened my eyes to power wasted in the driveline, especially in AWD systems.

swapdohc what are you planning to use to have it hold boost to redline? an MBC or you're going to go with one of the ECU tunes.

I don't know yet, I have a lot of homework to do in understanding this Motronic system. I think that installing a larger turbo that flows more at the same boost will probably give the most bang for the buck, add a programmer and the #'s will be impressive.
