Adding a sunroof

When I got my car my only requirement was that it to be a manual. As I couldnt afford an R-Design, that made it to I got a very basic v1.0. Of all the features i could have had the only one I often really wish I had was a sunroof. Thus, my question is...

Has anyone added a sunroof to their C30? Or does anyone know if its possible? While I would prefer an actual volvo installed c30 sunroof, i wouldnt mind it being aftermarket if that was my only option. I just really miss a sunroof! So, does anyone know?

I'm sure you can add an aftermarket, but it will never be as well integrated as the factory one.

Don't forget that factory sun roofs these days are not made to be leak free, but rather have drains to allow water that leaks to be properly dealt with. An aftermarket one would have to be installed "leak free". Good luck with that.

Remember when the Mercedes C Coupe added a so-called glass roof option a few years back? It was on the options list but fitted in the dealers. Most of their customers ended up in a shower of glass haha...quickly recalled I beleive.

I wouldnt recommend cutting your roof open to fit a sunroof. It's only got to go wrong once and you'll need one of these:

Oh well. On a related note, is there a roll bar in the C30? I was examining the roof when I was thinking about this yesterday, and the liner bulges like there is a thick bar running up and over the car sort of between the front and back seats. Do the models with sun roofs have that?

It would be either to sells your current one and buy another one with similar mileage/age just with a sunroof. Installing one would be a costly nightmare

aftermarket sunroofs leak more often than they dont, are never perfectly flush with the original body and never look as good from the inside as a factory installed one. they also have no warranty like a volvo one does and will often end up just causing alot more pain then enjoyment.

Below is your question answered and your problem solved: ( hopefully )

Two well know manufactures: Inalfa ( supplier for the C30 ?) and Webasto.

Both include warranty at least 3 years and several styles lifetime.

BTW ALL sunroofs come with a warranty unless it's:
Billy Bob's Auto-mobile Hole In the Roof and Gun Emporium /Tel: 404-KILL-HIM (404-545-5446)

http://www.inalfasunroofs.com Dutch company, has installers and a R&D facility in USA, TUV approved etc.

Most likely the company that makes the one for the C30 since it's close to Ghent. Read below:

Mission & Values
Facts & Figures
Our philosophy

Inalfa Roof Systems is one of the world's biggest providers of vehicle roof systems. Inalfa designs, develops and manufactures sunroofs and open-roof systems for the automotive industry, such as, Volvo BMW, Volkswagen, Citroën, Daimler, Chrysler, Chery, Nissan and many others. Inalfa Roof Systems is a reliable engineering and assembly partner.....Due to a global presence Inalfa is always in close proximity to its customers' ( GHENT) production lines.

or: An excellent American manufacture of sunroofs -

http://www.webasto.us/am/en/am_auto_sunroofs_485.html

http://www.webastoshowroom.com/warranty.html

You just gotta find out if they make one (Webasto) or have one one instock (Inalfa) for the C30.

Its a Webasto, unless they use a Webasto motor and an Inalfa (or ASC) roof mechanism (doubt it).

I asked the same question when I bought mine and was told it would mess with the body electronics and void the warranty.

Have had aftermarket roof before (Hollandia) in an XR6 Ford Falcon and have to say it was superior to the OE one in our Honda Accord.

Not a roll bar in true sense but roof rails are tied with center brace, same as my Golf with sunroof. Would assume brace remains with sunroof option on C30 as well and would not interfere with after-market install.

I'm assumimg you've been around cars for a long time and it could very well be Webasto and it could also be a Inalfa, manufactures often, very often use different suppliers during a run of a model. If I were BNizzle I'd check with both to see who has the closet to OE ( because it won't be exactly the same if it's "aftermarket" usually minor mods like the control placement and buttons) Volvo ( and all auto makers) wouldn't allow it. Still it seems odd that Volvo would ship a full kit from the US to Ghent, a motor I could see but the full set up ? But who knows I've heard of dumber things.

There could be a mid-run manufacturer swap, but we know for a fact that webasto makes at least the motor for my car, so that's where I would start. I'm betting that this item is sufficiently complicated that they stuck with one OEM unless there were major supply problems or webasto suddenly got gestapo with their pricing.

Of course without a detailed service manual, pressing Volvo for an accurate supplier history or taking apart a substantial (representative) population of c30's to learn the truth, this degrades into a weak argument of opinion rather quickly. It may or may not be possible to source an OE "kit" - who knows? I've purchased OEM parts with manufacturer logo's and part number scratched off of them before..

Personally I agree with earlier posts, a slapped in aftermarket kit is a mistake (92 Accord reference is funny and pretty accurate). The correct approach would be to find a wrecked car with an intact roof and swap roof assemblies or just swap cars as previously stated. I'm guessing that the latter will end up being cheaper in the long run.

That "rollbar" is part of the SIPS system. That is a "super strong" metal ring, which goes around the B-pillar section of the car... Was introduced 1992 (1991 in the Volvo 940 and 960 of the 92 modellyear) and has been a major part of the car since then.
